Mark A. Harrast, M.D.
Dr. Harrast is a specialist in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation with subspecialty expertise in Sports Medicine. His expertise is not only in sports and non-operative spine medicine, but also injury prevention and wellness. Dr. Harrast specializes in the assessment and management of sports injuries, particularly noted for managing overuse injuries in endurance athletes, runners, and triathletes. He is a competitive Ironman triathlete himself and understands, first-hand, the desire to stay active. Complementing his work at UW, Dr. Harrast is also the Medical Co-Director of the Seattle Marathon.
Dr. Harrast joined the faculty of the UW Departments of Rehabilitation Medicine and Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine in 2001. He graduated with honors from the University of Chicago and obtained his medical degree from Northwestern University. He was elected Chief Resident during residency at UW and was honored with the “Outstanding Resident Award” at graduation. Prior to returning to Seattle, he completed a fellowship in Sports and Spine Medicine at the University of Michigan.
Outside of work, Dr. Harrast is an accomplished competitive triathlete and runner. He has raced 8 marathons with a personal best of 2:46; 4 Ironman triathlons in the US, Canada, and Brazil, finishing in the 10-hour range; and numerous Olympic distance triathlons and road races nationally and internationally.
I like my patients to be active participants in their healthcare. We work together as a team to restore and maximize function lost through injury or illness. Spending the time to talk with and educate my patients is very important, particularly in that first encounter, so that they understand the issues well and can continue to be active participants in the healing process.
Dr. Harrast has a vibrant sports medicine practice. His expertise is not only in sports and non-operative spine medicine, but also injury prevention and wellness. He sees patients throughout the spectrum of life from adolescent athletes to masters athletes, from the high school varsity athlete to the professional athlete and the weekend warriors in between.
Dr. Harrast practices what he preaches. He is an accomplished competitive endurance athlete training for and racing in triathlons and marathons. He has raced 8 marathons with a personal best of 2:46; 4 Ironman triathlons in the US, Canada, and Brazil, finishing in the 10-hour range; and numerous Olympic distance triathlons and road races nationally and internationally.

Dr. Harrast's expertise lies in the realm of Sports Medicine, particularly involving the endurance athlete; overuse injuries in runners and triathletes. Dr. Harrast sees a wide range of patients, from the weekend warrior to the elite athlete, and the adolescent to the aging athlete.
Another particular clinical interest of Dr. Harrast is the athlete with back pain; and more specifically, the adolescent athlete with back pain / spondylolysis.
Dr. Harrast has several research interests which include:
1. Prevention and rehabilitation strategies of overuse injuries in endurance athletes.
2. Muscle imbalance and activation patterns as a source of musculoskeletal injury.
3. Back pain in active individuals.
4. Fluid balance and electrolyte disturbances in endurance athletes.
