Marla S. Kaufman, M.D.

Dr. Kaufman is a UW clinical assistant professor in the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine, with an adjunct position in the Department of Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine.  She specializes in the non-operative management of sports and musculoskeletal injuries in athletes and active individuals, including interventional spine procedures and electrodiagnostic testing.  She is board-certified in physical medicine and rehabilitation and sports medicine.

She earned her medical degree from the Medical College of Pennsylvania-Hahnemann University (now Drexel University) in Philadelphia.  Dr. Kaufman came to the University of Washington for her internship and residency, and also served as chief resident. She completed a sports medicine and interventional spine (ACGME-Pain Medicine Certified) fellowship at the University of Colorado Medical Center prior to joining the UW faculty.

Dr. Kaufman specializes in sports medicine/musculoskeletal injuries (such as knee or shoulder injuries), spine (such a back pain from a herniated disc), and electrodiagnostic medicine (such as a nerve study to evaluate for carpal tunnel syndrome).

Patient Care Philosophy
I believe that through education we can empower patients to take an active role in their treatment. My goal is to safely keep patients as active as possible, for as long as possible.

Personal Interests
In her free time, Dr. Kaufman enjoys biking, snow-shoeing and running. She was a college swimmer and has competed in various triathlons and marathons. A self-proclaimed “cardio-junkie,” Dr. Kaufman enjoys traveling abroad and just returned from a trip to Chile as part of the medical team for the Four Desert Races.
